Acronym MPAD - Fundamental Physics - First Year M1

 OBJECTIVES 

The M1-MPAD is a new degree course, allowing to postulate for any 5th year of university (5th year, specialities: research, professional or teaching).

At the -expected- Master level the purpose of this training, focused on "Fundamental Physics", will be to allow every MPAD graduate student:

  • To gain a strong general education in the major areas of physics and hence, for example,
  • To access to very high-level specialized training, integrating advanced technological developments mandatory for new jobs.
  • To be competent actors and trainers in educational structures or research and development, public or private, interdisciplinary or not.
  • To justify a second area of expertise, often considered necessary by potential employers.

 

 Why such "Distance Learning" 

The evolution of communications through Internet and the "World Wide Web" and the exponentially growing number of "connected" users makes University "distance-learning" very important at worldwide scale. It addresses a wide public of potential students.

The different branches of physics, with many areas of quickly evolving research, irrigating multiple sectors of technology and high-performance engineering, must be present in many fields of university education and "distance education" is becoming a major element allowing concerned professionals (present or future) to get a flexible and top level training.

The eventual creation of a Physics Master Course (M1 and M2) based on "distance education" and leading to a recognized university degree at the "+5 university level" is therefore mandatory.
Note that distance-training {M1+ M2} already exists at AMU for the "Masters in Mathematics and Application" and "Terrestrial Environment Sciences". The future {M1+ M2} "Fundamental Physics" curriculum should fit naturally with the updating of masters planned by the French Ministry of Education (MENESR) for 2018.

First step: the M1- MPAD – "Fundamental Physics" has started in September 2015.
Provisionally this M1 is a specific path in the existing "AMU - Master of Physics". It leads to a diploma "4th academic year-Maîtrise".

The start up of the second year (M2) is planned for September 2018.

 

 STRUCTURE OF LECTURES : M1-MPAD 

A special feature of "distance education", as proposed by the University of Aix-Marseille, is that each "half" of the M1 is proposed over a year (or period). In this way an "distance-learning student" will have a two-fold longer period -2 years- to get the required level.

 

Registration is done through "Centre de Télé Enseignement Sciences" of Aix-Marseille University.

To be accepted, any candidate has to justify a training in Physics corresponding to 3 academic years (Bachelor or equivalent).
The diploma "4th academic year- Maîtrise" is obtained after the validation of 60 ECTS. See below.

Note that, in the "presential" curriculum SPaCE, “Space Physics and Chemistry”-AMU-Master of Physics,  certified by the Academy of Excellence A*Midex, about half of the M1 courses are structurally based on "distance-learning" and pooled with those of M1-MPAD. This is, of course, a motivating factor for both teams.

 PEDAGOGICAL ASPECTS 

Given the expected diversity of students (especially diversity of Bachelors courses) pedagogical aspects are subject to special attention.

  • Restricted teaching teams (and available via internet)
  • The official teaching language is french for documents and exams.

But for the academic year 2015-2016 part of the documents will be already available in English. (see detailed programs)

 

 COORDINATION with the "REMOTE EDUCATION CENTER" 

    The CTES operates in coordination with the teachers involved in all areas concerning the specificity of distance education, in particular the registration records, control of knowledge and graduation.
